REUNION Christian Church - Boston

REUNION is a new church. Not an event, not a place, but a community of people. We exist to help people find their way back to God through Jesus Christ. We are a people of faith, community, and generosity that seek to communicate God's story in the urban landscape of Boston. You'll find we're imperfect people striving to become more like Christ, and not just on Sundays, but in the way we live every day.

Roots - Abraham: A New Beginning

In Genesis chapter 12, God begins a conversation with Abraham about blessing. This blessing was about more than God just causing him to prosper. God blessed Abraham so that others could be blessed. It's the beginning of God putting his family back together and repairing the brokenness we see in the world. God is a promise making and promise keeping God. This promise is eventually fulfilled in Jesus.

Renovation of the Heart - Societies

This week we talk about the Society or community of Jesus being a powerful new pattern to renovate our hearts. Jesus said his community would be know for the way that they love one another. Renovation of the heart doesn't just happen when you learn something but when you live it out in the presence of other people. -Hank Wilson

Renovation of the Heart - Need for Story

We need to maintain these hearts of ours with a two way conversation with God. If the primary way we directly communicate with God is through prayer, what is the primary way he communicates himself to us? Story. This message is about the power and need for the Story of God in our lives and a some practical advice for listening to the story. -Hank Wilson

The Divine Dialogue is simply prayer that begins to open the door for God to begin renewal in our hearts. But many of us do not have a regular routine of prayer in our lives. We need to develop prayer in order to connect and come into contact with the Creator. - John Tischer

In this message we examine our context that has formed our hearts, ask the question whether or not our heart is a trustworthy guide for life, and explore what it means to begin a Renovation of the Heart. - Tim Hawkins

Re: Joys - Joy in All Things

In the final installment of Philippians, Hank writes and reads a letter to the REUNION community. Paul's hope is that the Philippian church would be so permeated by the phronesis that it would change the way they experienced the world. We wrap up our series by contemplating those things that have managed to have the last word until Paul reminds us about grace and peace.

Re: Joys - Joy in Temptation

The Philippians church held a special place in Paul's heart. They had always had a closeness with his ministry and had always supported them. And yet he writes to strongly warn them about the complaining and questioning that was present in their young church. In Philippians 2, Paul's words deal with complaining and questioning toward leaders that threatens the unity of the church. He talks about the necessity of continued obedience and we talk about obedience in our context.

The 3rd week in our Series, This Beautiful Mess, we explore what it means for REUNION to be "my church" when we talk about community. Community groups are not the next level of involvement, but are places for everyone, for discovery, for caring and mission.

This Beautiful Mess - Everyone Pursues

The kingdom compels us to pursue it. Jesus tells a parable about a prodigal son that exposes the rebellion of the younger son and the strict religious rules keeping of the older brother both as manipulative ways to get what they wanted. Keeping this in mind, we discuss how one lives a life of faith and the role of our Sunday morning gatherings.

In our last week of Advent Conspiracy, we light the candle of love. It's important to understand that you can't just say you love someone, you need to show it. This is what God did for us in sending Jesus.

Advent Conspiracy - Joy

This week we focus on the Joy of Advent by investigating why God sent angels to the shepherds to announce the birth of Jesus. The shepherds were irreligious, unworthy, untrustworthy, and unclean. And yet God made sure that people who were outsiders know that this was good news for them too. Being a dispenser of God's grace is the completion of joy in our lives.

The Story of Everything - Church

People have many different definitions of the word church don't they? Most see it as a place to go to get your spiritual needs taken care of just like you'd go to a grocery market if you needed food. In the story of everything, however, the church is God’s primary way of bringing life into deadness since the day Jesus left this earth.

With - I With No One

It's inevitable that we will at some point feel the weight of loneliness in our lives. And when those times come, do we understand that we can be lonely but never truly alone? In following the pattern of David's Psalms, we can learn to pour out our hearts to God and recount how he has come through for us in the past. This can help prepare us for when it feels like no one is there or cares.

Sunday Best - Communion

At the Last Supper, Jesus departed from 1400 years of Passover history by saying that his body and blood established a new covenant. Paul calls him our passover lamb that has been sacrificed whose death and resurrection atoned for sin completely. Here we talk about why we take communion and most importantly who we take it for.

Making Life Work - Take Initiative

Proverbs has a unique name for lazy people. It calls them sluggards. In Boston's fast paced and hurried culture, we don't see people who are sluggards near as often as we see really hard-working people be successful in most areas of their life, except for one or two. These are places we practice a kind of selective sluggardliness. Whether in our relationships, at work, our finances, or even our spirituality, God wants us to take initiative in every single area of our life. It's part of how life works.

Originally written to adolescent boys in training, the point is clear about wisdom's significance. When we walk the path of wisdom we become more than just people who know how to make good choices.

Losing My Religion - Finding Freedom

The philosophical challenge to our contemporary faith is similar to that facing the young church in Colosse, namely that we are naive to think we can limit a connectedness to God to faith in Jesus. Paul explains that the cross was a demonstration of a deep forgiveness rather than superficial indifference to our moral failings. Consequently, faith in Jesus frees us from the uncertainty of getting religion right, and invites us into the dynamic relationship with God.

Losing My Religion -Finding Jesus

Many writers tell us to lose our religion citing that religion is pointless and even harmful with the terrible things that have been done in the name of different gods. The Apostle Paul would agree. He encouraged a young church in Colossae to lose their religion by finding Jesus. Because ultimately Jesus does what no religion can do. Being firstborn among the dead, he has reconciled all things by his resurrection.

The trouble people have in their romantic relationships (dating and marriage) is usually NOT because they don't love the person. It's not because they don't really love each other that they can't get along and miss out on the good stuff they got in the relationship for in the first place. It's because love (when you defined it by how much you care or how strongly you feel about someone) is never enough. We need to know what the other person really needs and how to meet those needs with God's help.

Invest

Of all the stuff ever sold on eBay, perhaps the most interesting is the rash of people who tried putting their souls up for sale. Heard about that? A guy in Chicago, a DePaul University Grad student, Hermant Mehta, a self-professed atheist sold his soul for $504.

The winning bidder was a former pastor named, Jim Henderson who made a deal with the student. Days after the auction, the former pastor, flew to Chicago to see Mr. Mehta. The two met in a bar, where they sealed a deal a little different from the one the student had offered. Instead of the 50 hours of church attendance that he was entitled to for his $504, Jim Henderson asked that Hermant Mehta attend 10 to 15 services of Mr. Henderson's choosing and then write about it.

The chronicle of the experience created a unique conversation. The pastor had 10,000 hits in the first 10 days! Even though people may still feel like religion is one of the things you never talk about (right up there with money, politics and sex), more people than ever are open and searching spiritually. There is no doubt - we live in an era of unprecedented spiritual interest and open-ness.

Sadly, the church is being excluded from much of the conversation. It’s the vision of REUNION to be a people that will reengage in the conversation taking place.

Holy Chaos

Two of the founding fathers of the study of effects of stress (Holmes & Rahe) came up with an index of the top 43 most stressful life events. It includes everything from going through a divorce to having a baby to buying a new house to changing jobs. And guess what else makes the list of most stressful life-change events? CHRISTMAS. Christmas is the only holiday that makes the list; no other does.

Christmas is a chaotic time of year, and God wants to help us deal with the chaos. He also wants us to embrace the chaos that comes with the territory of being a Christ-follower.
